Monarda Fistulosa (Wild Bergamot)

Price range: $15.00 through $57.50

Wild Bergamot is a perennial plant that is sought after for its whimsical lavender flowers. It is bushy in nature with an open-branched structure, usually 2-5 ft tall and wide.

Since Monarda Fistulosa is native to most of North America, it is a safe bet for most home gardens. It performs best in full sun and moderately moist soils. Although tolerant of occasional drought, water-stressed plants are more susceptible to mildew. In the wild, you would find Bergamot on prairies, dry rocky woods, unplanted fields, and along roads and railroads.

The Dr. Suess-esque pompom flower clusters bloom July- September and are showy in floral arrangements, both fresh cut or dried. Include some of the foliage in your arrangement to bring its distinctively minty aromatic scent indoors.

Outdoors, Bergamot or Horsemint,  is a great choice for attracting pollinators: bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds without attracting deer, which tend to avoid this minty plant.

Fun Fact: This minty plant has a history of medicinal use among indigenous peoples for helping with such things as lacerations, as well as tea infusions for headaches, indigestion, and colds and flu.

Description

We have sought out plant varieties that provide low maintenance, use little or no water once established, and are simply hardy enough to grow where others don’t.

We grow and ship our plants in 5″ or quart-size (in certain varieties) plastic containers. Knowing that the root system is the most important part of the plant we guarantee. our plants to have a large root system that fills the container.

CHP is a small family operation! We propagate, pot, water, prune, and personally package the plants you order from us. Most of our plants are grown from cuttings taken from the plants or seeds collected near the nursery at an elevation of 6300 ft. Our weather is extreme, with temps below 0 being common in the winter and intense sunlight all summer long. We don’t grow plants in heated greenhouses; they have to survive the elements! Please note that deciduous plants ordered in the winter months and early spring will have been pruned a minimum of 30% compared to photos and may have no leaves. Our nursery is also licensed and inspected by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Nursery Division and holds a current Japanese Beetle Certificate.

You’ll note in our feedback that our shipping process is a sight to behold. We love our customers so please don’t hesitate to reach out.
